Current research activities in Hong-Yi Gong's laboratory focus on the following areas:
 
(1) Study of molecular mechanisms involved in the regulation and balance of growth and immunity in teleost by molecular genetics and functional genomics approaches.
以分子遺傳學及功能性基因體方法研究參與魚類生長及免疫之調控與其平衡之分子機制。

(2) Genetic improvement of farmed aquatic animals. Development of databases of transcriptomes, genomes to looking for genetic variations including microsatellites/SSRs, SNPs, insertions, deletions (Indels), copy number variations (CNVs), especially those associated with functional genes as Type I molecular markers for Genome-Wild Association Studies (GWAS) and Marker-Assisted Selection (MAS) to improve broodstock of the farmed aquatic animals such as tilapia, grouper, silver seabream, angelfish, etc., in critical economic traits as growth promotion, disease resistance, stress tolerance, pigment formation, and so on.
養殖水產動物之遺傳改良。發展轉錄體及基因體資料庫以尋找包含微衛星、單核甘酸多型性、DNA插入或缺失及基因拷貝數變異等遺傳變異,特別是與功能性基因相關之第一型分子標誌可用於全基因組關聯分析(GWAS)及標誌輔助育種(MAS),以改良養殖魚類如吳郭魚斑魚、黃錫鯛、神仙魚等水產動物之重要經濟性狀如促進成長、抗病、抗逆境及色素形成等。

(3) Study of short form and long form progranulin genes products PGRNs and GRNs involved in the regulation of innate immunity and growth of aquatic animals such as tilapia, groupers and shrimps.   
水生動物如吳郭魚、石斑魚及蝦子之短型及長型顆粒蛋白前體基因(progranulins)產物PGRNsGRNs參與先天免疫及生長調控之功能性研究。

(4) Genetic breeding of Disease-Resistant Nile tilapia by Markers-Assisted Selection and investigation of disease-resistant related genes.
以分子標誌輔助選育進行尼羅吳郭魚之抗病育種(抗鏈球菌)及抗病相關基因研究。 

(5) Zebrafish as an animal model of aquaculture teleosts and human to investigate molecular mechanisms of liver, muscle development, growth and related diseases.
以斑馬魚做為模式動物研究水產養殖魚類及人類之肝臟肌肉之發育、生長及其相關疾病。

(6) Tissue-specific promoter/enhancer was used to establish transgenic fish to study functional genes involved in fish growth and immunity and applied to transgenic fluorescent ornamental fish such as transgenic pink angelfish and infertility control of GM fish.
以組織專一性啟動子/增強子建立基因轉殖魚以研究參與魚類生長及免疫功能性基因,並應用於建立基因轉殖螢光觀賞魚如基因轉殖粉紅神仙魚及其不孕控制。

(7) Establishment of transgenic tilapia as bioreactors for production of recombinant proteins and biomaterials for aquaculture or biomedical industry.
建立基因轉殖吳郭魚做為生物反應器,以生產水產養殖或生醫產業需要之重組蛋白及生物材料。
